As is the case with many sports, contemporary games were made very popular in the United States of America by attendees at and from well-known schools and universities. These seem to have had much in common with the old "mob football" played in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, especially on Shrove Tuesday.
By the early eighteen hundreds, a notoriously violent game which was known as "ballown" was popular at the New Jersey College (later to become Princeton University). During 1827 a student of Harvard University composed a humorous epic poem called The Battle of the Delta, one of the first accounts of American university football. Also around the 1820s, Dartmouth College students, in Hanover, New Hampshire, were playing a game which involved kicking a spherical ball that became to be called "Old Division Football". Rules were published for this game in 1871.
