As is the
case with many sports, modern games were made extremely popular in
the U.S.A. by attendees at and from elite schools and
universities. These well-attended games seem to have great
commonality with the traditional "mob football" widely played in
Britain, especially on Shrove Tuesday.
By
eighteen-twenty, an extemely dangerous game which was named "ballown"
was being played at the (later known as Princeton University).
During 1827 an attendee of Harvard University composed an epic
humorous poem which he called The Battle of the Delta, one of the
earliest accounts of football in American universities. Around the
eighteen-twenties too, Dartmouth College attendees, in Hanover,
New Hampshire, were playing a game which involved kicking a
spherical ball that would be known as "Old Division Football". The
players published rules for this game in 1871.
